The Reef was originally written for a competition, in mid-2025. Seeing as it didn’t win said competition, it has since been ruthlessly subjected to multiple edits. No longer bound by a word count (among other tedious requirements), the characters and world are allowed to blossom a little brighter in this new, definitive version.
What inspired this story? Well, without revealing too many spoilers, I like Ferns; we need more Ferns in this world; I wanted to write a story about Ferns. Oh, and I was daydreaming about visiting the Great Barrier Reef at the time of conception.
And, from these simple thoughts, I birthed The Reef.
